IMI drops in 50 municipalities, only 2 increase rates.

Among the 308 municipalities in the country, 187 decided to apply the minimum tax rate of 0.3%.

The vast majority, among the 308 municipalities in the country, opted to reduce the IMI rates, which they charge in their geographic areas, in 2023: in 50 municipalities, the Municipal Property Tax rate will be reduced. Tábua and Matosinhos are the only municipalities that have gone ahead with an increase in the IMI for this year.

Among the 308 municipalities, a total of 187 councils (59%) will charge the minimum IMI rate (0.3%) this year, according to the Tax and Customs Authority, quotes Idealista/news.

It should be remembered that the municipalities set the IMI rates to be charged to residents the following year, subsequently communicating them to the Tax and Customs Authority until the 31st of December.

Gondomar (0.4%), Loures (0.367%), Santiago do Cacém (0.33%), Seixal (0.34%), Beja (0.3%) and Barcelos (0.33%) were some of the municipalities that opted for the IMI reduction in 2023.

According to data from the Finance Portal, only two municipalities decided to raise the IMI rate: Tábua, with an increase from 0.3% to 0.35%, and Matosinhos, from 0.325% to 0.375%.

IMI at the minimum rate

Lisbon, Amadora, Leiria, Coimbra, Bragança, Funchal, Castelo Branco, Viseu, Oeiras or Sintra are some of the 187 councils that set their IMI rate in 2023 at the minimum stipulated by law (0.3%)

IMI at the maximum rate

With regard to IMI at the maximum rate (0.45%), it will be charged in only seven municipalities in the country (about 2.6% of the total): Vila Real de Santo António, Alandroal, Cartaxo, Nazaré, Caminha, Mafra and Vila Nova de Poiares.

(The City Council of Tomar opted to reduce the IMI/2023 rate from 0.35% to 0.34%)
